9th Grade Reading III/Advanced Reading Syllabus

 2008-2009

Miss Simmons Room 107

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome!  I am looking forward to a great year.  My goal for the year is to be a part of a learning community where everyone is respectful and responsible at all times.  In this classroom you will be exposed to various reading strategies and experiences that will not only increase your reading abilities, but more importantly, increase your LOVE of reading!

  1.  Materials:  Staying organized is a very important life skill that can help you succeed in this class.  Thus, it is essential that you have the following materials with you in class daily:

a.     Pencil or pen

b.     3-prong folder with pockets

c.     Personal Dictionary

d.     PAPER – EVERYDAY

e.     Reading materials from home (book, magazines, etc.) for silent reading

Must be school appropriate material

  1.  Classroom Expectations:  In addition to the classroom expectations listed below, you are required to follow all guidelines outlined in the 2008-2009 WFHS student handbook.  If you do not have a copy of the student handbook, you can print one from the school website.

1.      Treat others the way you expect to be treated.

2.     Report to class prepared for instruction by having the proper supplies.

3.     Listen quietly when the teacher or another student is talking to the class.

4.      Food or Drink is not allowed in the classroom.

5.      Electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom.

6.     Respect the teacher as well as other students (no put downs or profanity)

  1. Discipline:  Students are expected to follow all classroom rules.  If there is a consistent problem with classroom behavior, parents/guardians will be contacted by a report sent to the parent to be signed and returned, a phone call, or an email.

  1. Grades:  It is important for you to understand that I don’t give grades; YOU earn your own grades.  Your quarter grades will be determined by the following percentages:

Vocabulary and Skill Tests:                  30%

Projects:                                              25%

Class Assignments:                               25%

Class participation:                               20%

(Class Participation includes Silent, Sustained reading and book talks)

  1. Make-Up Work: If you miss work due to an excused absence, it is your responsibility to get your missing work turned in.  You will have the same number of excused days you were absent to turn in the work.  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to talk to me.  If you miss a test, you may make arrangements with me to make up the test.

  1.  Late Work:  Assignments are to be turned in on time.  If for some reason you need extra time, please see me and arrangements can be made; otherwise, late work is not accepted!

  1. Bathroom Passes:  Our time is valuable!  Please do not ask to go to the bathroom when I am instructing or presenting a lesson.  I will not write bathroom passes during the first or last 10 minutes of class time!

  1. Tips to help you succeed in this class:

    1. Come to class prepared everyday
    2. Complete work on time
    3. Be considerate of others in your class
    4. If you are having trouble please ask ME for help!
    5. Label your work with your name, date, class and period in the top right-hand corner of each assignment.
